Human-centered design is all about building a deep empathy with the people you’re designing for; generating tons of ideas; building a bunch of prototypes; sharing what you’ve made with the people you’re designing for; and eventually putting your innovative new solution out in the world.

This interest in design thinking and human-centered design means that many organizations are bringing in experts to teach their teams some of the methods. So, if that happens to you, please don’t roll your eyes. The tenants of human-centered design are practical, actionable, and can be put to work in just about any professional scenario. —Tim Brown, Executive Chair of IDEO Design thinking has a human-centered core.

Human-centred design is an iterative practice that makes feedback from the people we’re designing for a critical part of how a solution evolves. By continually validating, refining and improving our work we can discover the root causes of knotty problems, generate more ideas, exercise our creativity and arrive more quickly at fitting solutions.

This way of thinking has been studied by scientists, creatives, scholars, analysts, and engineers for decades, but the idea to apply solving problems with a design mindset to business strategy didn’t exist until cognitive scientist and Nobel Prize laureate Herbert A. Simon coined the term in 1969. I know that digital marketing and human-centered service design skills are important but I don’t know how to improve them. I need to understand the local and Asian markets as well as getting insight from international perspectives in order to engage better with customers, clients, and build relationships, but I don’t know where to get the knowledge.

Hence, design thinking has a larger scope of use. While human-centred design mostly focuses on the user interface and known issues, design thinking goes beyond such limitations: It can be used for developing new products and services but also for evolving concepts for the solution of social questions.

When you practice human-centered design, the loop of continuous iteration looks like this: (1) you make a rough prototype, (2) you share with the people who will be using it, (3) you gather their feedback, (4) you use that feedback directly inform and refine the next When done well, a human-centered approach fuels the creation of products that resonate more deeply with an audience — ultimately driving engagement and growth.
